Art Camp Winter 2014

FEBRUARY 4, 2014

What a great time.  Christopher Holt came down to Charleston and joined Jill Hooper and I for a week of uninterruped landscape painting. We shut off our phones, ignored the world and set out in the work van up and down the coast of South Carolina.

I love these guys! Truly my favorite painting partners. I learn so much everytime.

From Winyah Bay to Edisto Island, we bundled up and tried to capture the crisp clouds and the kaleidoscope as it changed.

We drove past the malls, past the random gas stations, past the moile homes to the end of the Highway, and took a right into Rockville. Literally a dirt road seaside town, with one road in and the same road out. Many thanks to Johnny Maybank for lending us his villa on the marsh complete with champagne and bud light in the fridge.

We ended the week at an amazing old rice plantation.  The familys working the land have done so for 5 generations and the owners have saved hundreds of acres of marsh from development.  Pictured here is an old rice field trunk. Truth be told, we did more exploring than painting, but it was almost impossible to pick just one subject. I could have stopped every 50 feet to paint a picture. Hopefully this is only the first of many visits to Rochelle.

The calm of the ocean.  The calm of painting. The calm of good friends.  It was freezing, but we layered up and did our best.  I cant wait for the next adventure.
